Shep aka Chief Shep aka Chief Gender: Male
Age: adult
Loc: California
Status: Available
Anderson Valley, CA - Beautiful Silver Sable Shepherd/mix ... This sweet and loving Shep [aka Chief] has been waiting a long time for his perfect home! He adores other dogs and humans of all ages. This is a dog that loves to be around his family and companions, both dogs and people. He would do best having the companionship of at least one other friendly and playful dog, while also getting to enjoy plenty of love and attention from his humans. An ideal situation would be one in which someone is home the majority of the time, and there is the stability of calm, relaxed leadership.
Shep responds well to positive reinforcement training, as he is both sensitive and eager to please! Although he is not accustomed to being in the house unsupervised, he is reliably house trained and will happily sleep through the night on a dog bed in the bedroom. Shep gets along extremely well with other dogs and is very playful; he shows no interest in being dominant or domineering, but also is not submissive. A large enclosure/yard with secure 6’ fencing will be best for him.
While Shep loves to go on adventures (hiking, etc), he also does not seem to have a high need for extreme physical exercise, at least while living in a fairly large space of an acre or more. Shep has no issues with food aggression or resource guarding. His progress with obedience training in his foster home is a testament to his trusting nature, adaptability, and desire for positive reinforcement. Shep will be an amazing companion for someone who can provide him with the right environment, has large-breed experience, and is familiar with positive reinforcement training. Shep needs a home without cats or other small animals as he has displayed a strong prey drive at his foster home. An Adoption Application, including references and a home check, will be required for adoption. For more information about Shep, please email Robin at CalmCompanions@hotmail.com, or contact Kay by phone at (559) 906-1829 / email at rescuednoah1@aol.com.

Minion and Koda Minion and Koda Gender: Male
Age: adults
Loc: California
Status: Available, URGENT
Urgent! Lancaster CA Meet Minion and Koda - looking for new homes. Their owner loves them very much and have had them most of their lives, and due to a divorce and moving, sadly they need to be placed into new homes.
Two year old Minion (darker one) and his brother 1.5 year Koda (lighter one) are looking for a new family. They are both neutered, UTD on their vaccinations. Due to circumstances beyond their control their current family can no longer keep them, but these boys have been well loved since puppyhood. Both boys are loving and sweet, and while preferable that they go to the same home, they can be adopted separately. These are wonderful, happy indoor/outdoor boys, who are open and social. They are rough players and love to romp and chase so a nice yard and daily exercise would be great for them. They will make a great addition to the right family. Both dogs are fed a raw diet with supplements.
About Minion: He is a big boy at 130 lbs, he’s good with all types of dogs, he’s well behaved in the home and is fully housetrained. But is not cat friendly, and has a high prey drive so he will pull on leash if he sees a rabbit or cat. He is friendly with children and adults, more on the submissive side and rides well in the car. Minion is not crate trained. While proper fencing and containment is required, Minion is not an escape artist, but does enjoy digging. In a new home it's always best to supervise them for a while to make sure they are secure.M
About Koda: He's absolutely gorgeous!1 ½ year old Koda is good with all dogs, large and small. He is very social and has enjoyed going to the dog park. He will pull slightly on leash, but responds well to a gentle leader. Koda is well behaved in the house, housetrained and is not an escape artist, but does enjoy digging too. Typical of the breed, Koda is stubborn but food motivated and will work for food. He has no food aggression. He has some slight resource guarding with his toys at the dog park, but not at home. Koda loves car rides. He is submissive to adults and children. Koda is fun loving and very smart, and like any smart puppy will take advantage if given the opportunity so a strong leader will be best with Koda. Koda is sweet and kind and once he gets to know you will hike with you off leash. If you are interested in one or both of these pups, please contact Jennnifer at jenniferreitman@gmail.com for more information and an Adoption Application.

Legend Legend Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Loc: Nevada
Status: Available, URGENT
URGENT! Las Vegas, NV - Legend cannot be kept by his owner any more so he only has about 3 weeks before he winds up at the shelter. Legend is a Malamute/Husky mix and maybe some Border Collie with thosebeautiful markings. He's 4 1/2 years old, neutered, vaccinations, and weighs about 90 lbs. Legend is not very trustful of other dogs or men, and seems to be partial to female owners that are calm and assertive. He needs someone that has experiences with northern breeds and will take the time to give him some training and daily exercise. He's not very social with other dogs so will need training and socialization in this area. He's not good with cats or small dogs although he does live with a Chihuahua (we will not adopt to those with small animals). Legend also needs some leash training as he does pull, but good daily exercise and an experienced handler can fix this easily. He is not a jumper or climber, but does need at least 6 or 7' fencing. He has no food aggression with people but is protective with other dogs. Legend likes to ride in the car. He is a big family/pack dog and loves to cuddle and just hang with you. He would be best in a home that is calm and disciplined, with no kids, nor lots of activity or visitors. His owner does not know how to handle his dominance and will bring him to the pound if we do not find a suitable home for Legend. Please help this dog. If you are interested in Legend, please contact ouor Animal Coordinator, Robin at CalmCompanions@hotmail.com

Aries Aries Gender: Female
Age: 5-month
Loc: California
Status: Available
Very Urgent! Aries needs your help!
Vacaville, CA - Aries is a beautiful 5-month-old Husky/Shepherd mix who is up to date on vaccinations. She will need to be spayed, micro-chipped, and undergo surgery for an injured rear leg, prior to adoption. We are working to raise the funds for her surgery as she needs leg surgery as soon as possible. Spaying can wait for now.
She had been raised with small dogs and is friendly and playful with other dogs. She rides well in the car and is friendly with people. Aries has no experience with young children, so we would like to place her in a home that is calm where she can recuperate. Her general disposition is energetic and playful. Once her leg is healed she will likely enjoy an active lifestyle as most other Nordic breeds.
She will, however, need an adopter who understands confidence building and the large amount of work that puppies require (house-training, leash-training, and puppy destruction) as Aries is a bit shy and unsure.
If you are an experienced dog owner, understand northern breeds, and feel this beautiful girl might be a nice addition to your family, please contact our Rescue Coordinator, Robin, at calmcompanions@hotmail.com or Jennifer at Jennifer@damemedia.com Time is of the essence as we want to get her procedure done and on the road to playtime! Please send any donations to our PayPal on our website if you want to help Aries get her surgery. Thank you!

Loki Loki Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Loc: California
Status: Available
California - Loki is a beautiful male, just over 2 years old. He is neutered, chipped, and up to date on vaccinations and weighs approximately 80lbs.
He has gotten along with his malamute brother, but is cautious and fearful with strange dogs and will need slow and steady introductions, and is not a “dog park” animal. He is not good with small dogs or cats, and cannot go to a home with those.
Loki does great on leash, can be walked loose leashed and prefers to sniff than pulling. He is housebroken, and his signals to be let out are to pace back and forth while looking at you. As Loki is still quite young, he still likes to chew, so ample chew toys are best for this boy. He has had basic obedience training, and knows sit, wait and is crate trained. He has no food aggression with people but can be a little possessive over his nylabone.
He is not a known escape artist (does not jump/climb or try to dig out), but standard fencing requirements for the breed will apply. He is shy and submissive with strangers, but affectionate with his family.
Loki has a couple special considerations. He likely has some separation anxiety and does not like to be left alone and wants to be with his family. So he should go to a home that has someone who works from home and can be patient to work with him on this and make him feel secure. Loki also had a bought of Pancreatitis and must remain on a strict grain free diet with no extra protein or fat. NO table scraps. Contact jenniferreitman@gmail.com for more information. Application and home check will apply.

Myshka Myshka Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: Florida
Status: Available
Ideally Myshka would go to a home which has another medium or large breed size of a dog that will accept her - she is very submissive. She does not like small dogs. Even though she has met a couple small dogs that she fell in love with before, so it all depends. The new owner will need to know how to handle a shy wolfdog. She takes time to warm up, but then is super sweet and cuddly. She roams free around the farm when she is outside of her pen and follows her foster mom everywhere, without a leash and comes when called. She has jumped out of the pen before they had the electric fence attached to the top, now she doesn't. She digs only to create a cool hole, not to get out. She will need a companion dog. She howls when by herself. She is a good dog and someone will love having her. Contact Debbie at dak0717@hotmail.com

Kayo Kayo Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: Florida
Status: Available
Kayo is around 4 years old; spayed, but needs her vaccines. Kayo is blind in her right eye. For the last two years she has lived on a chain the entire time. She now shares an area with another dog at her foster home and they do very well. She plays very well with all other dogs both big and small. She does have a walker hound in the area beside her; a pit bull and a heeler in the area in front of her. There aren’t any issues with her; she adjusted well living off her chain, having a large area, and large dog house.
For her foster mom she will sit, give paw and also jump on the dog house at command. She loves to be brushed, and roll over and have her belly rubbed. Her foster mom can touch her all over, including feet, tail, teeth, ears....etc. No food aggression, foster mom is able to give her food and take it away. She enjoys her evening cookie/treat. Recently, duck flew into her pen, she picked it up, but she released it once she was told to leave it. The duck scurried to the other side of the pen she did not go after it, the duck was left with pick up marks that healed. Contact Debbie at dak0717@hotmail.com.

Loc: Connecticut
Status: Available, URGENT, CRITICAL

12 feral dogs - mostly Malamute mixes
CONTACT: Susan at Weidel@uwyo.edu and Les at Les_hickey@xtoenergy.com
These dogs are feral, loose on property that is not fenced. Most have porcupine quills in faces, swollen, no vet care but seem to be in good health otherwise. They are shy but not aggressive. There is a shed on property where a few dogs at a time can be herded and kept a few hours until pick up. Any help with capture is welcome and greatly needed as the property/dog owners are incapable of helping due to health issues. It looks like two females are in "cages." Osine may be pregnant. Rhea Rhea Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: California
Status: Available, URGENT
Urgent! Placerville, CA - Rhea is a 65 lb, beautiful Husky mix with a social and friendly disposition toward other medium and large sized dogs. She is currently tethered in the back yard much of the day and is quite lonely and desperate as her owner recently lost job and cannot keep her any longer. She is up to date on vaccinations and seems to be in good health. Rhea is quite lithe and athletic, she will require an escape-proof yard (7-8 foot fence or 6' with lean ins, plus dig guard) and would do best as a companion dog to an active person or couple (she is not a good fit for families with young children). Having a dog buddy will help her feel more secure when left alone. True to the Nordic breeds, she is not recommended for homes with small animals, including small dogs. Her ideal home would allow her to accompany her people during the day because she will vocalize if left alone for more than an hour or two, so an owner that works at home or is retired would be wonderful for this sweetie. Opportunities to exercise and burn off young Husky energy should occur daily as often as possible. If interested in giving this sweet girl a foster or permanent home, please email Robin at calmcompanions@hotmail.com or PamelaJo at Pamelajowolflady2@sbcglobal.net (775) 833-2066 or Presley at ttldogtraining@gmail.com

Peanut Peanut Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: Oregon
Status: Available, URGENT
Urgent! Sweet Home, Oregon - needs home by mid-April or will be PTS! Peanut is a 45 lb, spayed little girl of 10 yrs. Peanut appears to be a husky mix. She is part of a larger group of dogs who must have homes in April or they are going to be euthanized. Their owner has lost the property and only can take 2 dogs with him to his new rental. I cannot let that happen to them and am hoping that someone with a kind heart for older dogs will come forward. Peanut and her friends are only socialized to their owners and have never been off their property. Peanut is a gregarious little girl though and with someone who will be patient and kind, she will open up to them. Peanut would do best having a nice male companion ... her best friend was adopted and she was heartbroken so we really want her to have a sweet boyfriend. Peanut is in great condition and has no medical issues. She will not be placed where there are small children, cats or small doggies. She has lived only outdoors but so far all of her dog friends who have been placed are getting to adjust being in the house and they love it, so I am certain Peanut will as well. Please contact Kim at kimkahl@dukewarner.com or call 541-382-0065 for more info and an adoption application.

Max Max Gender: Male
Age: adult
Loc: Washington
Status: Available
Everette, WA - Max is a beautiful Husky/Malamute mix who will be 2 years old in February and is currently in foster. He was surrendered into Rescue, because he is a bit of an escape artist and his owners were not able to keep him contained on their property. During one of his escapades he got injured and is now almost blind in one eye. This does not seem to bother him at all, and he is still very handsome. Only when you look close can you see a bit of cloudiness in his eye. Max is a little shy at first, but becomes a very sweet playful boy with a lot of Husky-energy once he gets to know you. He needs a house with a big yard and secure 6-foot fencing. Max is very good with other dogs and would do best with a buddy. He has been living with cats in his foster home and has shown no interest in them, but has made fast friends with his doggie-housemates. Max would do best with a woman, since he is scared of men. He is very smart and sensitive, so he could probably learn to get along with a man who is calm and very patient, but it will take time. Due to his fear of men, he would not be good in dog parks. Max is looking for a home where he can feel safe and loved. As long as he gets enough exercise and feels no need to escape, he will be a wonderful and fun family member. Max has not been exposed to small children during his time in foster. Max is neutered and all his shots are up-to-date. Please contact Kim for an Adoption Application at KimKahl@dukewarner.com. Diamond updated 8/27/15 Diamond updated 8/27/15 Gender: Male
Age: adult
Loc: Oregon
Status: Available, URGENT
Updated 8/27/15 Still Needs a Home! Portland, OR - Handsome Diamond
Shentea Adopted! Now Diamond, the 3-year-old brother [who has a longer fluffy coat] needs a home. He is lonely without his sister. They both weigh about 45 lbs, 25" at the shoulders. Diamond will be neutered prior to adoption. They are UTD on vaccinations. Both are German Shepherd/Husky mixes and very beautiful! Diamond is reserved but often plays with other dogs through the fence. Both walk on leash and get better with continued training. Original owner says they are housetrained but they have been outside in enclosed kennel since March in their foster home, so may need a little reminder training. Diamond is not a jumper but will try to dig out to escape if anxious - but at his foster home within a month the digging stopped. Commands such as Sit, Lie Down, Come-sit, Sit-Wait…eat [for dinner] & Foster Mom is working on “quiet” & “gentle” with treats. Both are quick studies/fast learners with firm, loving consistency – a show-me attitude and progressing every day. Foster mom also using hand signals with voice commands. Diamond is a little more outgoing than his sister once he knows you but initially stresses in new surroundings, so time and patience is needed to help them adjust to a new home. He and Shentea both will need to be contained when not supervised - if inside, a large sturdy kennel with roof & floor; or secure, escape-proof yard when outdoors. Our goal is to get them adopted into a loving, structured and experienced home as soon as possible as Foster Mom cannot keep Diamond any longer. Someone who is around a lot (retired, works a thome, etc.) would be best to help Diamond adjust to a new home. Daily exercise/hiking keeps all these northern breeds relaxed and happy. We really don't want Diamond going to a shelter so please help him find a good home. Contact Kim Kahl kimkahl@dukewarner.com as soon as possible! Transportation help is available. 4/13/15 Still Very Urgent! Klamath Falls, OR - These two sweeties are in foster care and need a home right away! Diamond is the 3-year-old brother who has a longer fluffy coat, and Shentea (Shen-tah) is the 2-year-old sister, shorter luxurious coat. They both weigh about 45 lbs, 25" at the shoulders. Shentea is spayed and Diamond will be neutered prior to adoption. They are UTD on vaccinations. Both are German shepherd mixes and very beautiful! Shentea is shy when approaching new dogs but warms up after a proper introduction. Diamond is reserved but often plays through the fence. He is protective of his sister but this should change after neutering and will be better when adopted into separate homes. Both walk on leash and get better with continued training. Original owner states they are housetrained but they have been outside in enclosed kennel since March in their foster home so may need a reminder. Shentea is quite lithe and tried to clear the 6' chain-link fencing upon arrival. Although she hasn't challenged the fencing since she arrived she will need secure fencing. Diamond is not a jumper but will try to dig out to escape if anxious and within a month the digging stopped. Commands such as Sit, Lie Down, Come-sit, and Sit-Wait…eat [for dinner] & Foster Mom is working on “quiet” & “gentle” with treats. Both are quick studies/fast learners with firm, loving consistency – a show-me attitude and progressing every day. Foster mom also using hand signals with voice commands. FM separates them on tie out chains during feeding as Diamond acknowledges Shentea as alpha & she eats much faster than her brother and then will help herself to Diamond’s food. They should be fed separately whether adopted together or separately. Shentea has taken on watch-dog attitude @ FM’s when anyone comes on property. She is not overly fond of strangers, but will warm up with consistent interaction and proper introduction. Diamond is a little more outgoing. Diamond initially stresses in new surroundings so time and patience is needed to help them adjust to a new home. He and Shentea both will need to be contained when not supervised - if inside, a sturdy kennel with roof & floor; or secure, escape-proof yard when outdoors. Our goal is to get them adopted into a loving, structured and experienced home as soon as possible as Foster Mom cannot keep them any longer. Someone who is around a lot (retired, works at home, etc.) would be best to help either of these pups to adjust to a new home. Daily exercise/hiking will keep them relaxed and focused. We really don't want these babies going to a shelter so please help them find homes. Contact Kim Kahl kimkahl@dukewarner.com soon as possible! Transportation help is available.

Denali and Gypsy Denali and Gypsy Gender: Male, Female
Age: adult
Loc: Nevada
Status: Available
Yerrington, NV - two beautiful young Malamute/wolfdogs, male -Denali, and female - Gypsy, have been rescued from the Olympic Animal Sanctuary in Washington. The sanctuary could no longer care for their 160 dogs so they were dispersed to various Rescues. All the dogs had all been kept in poor conditions and tiny pens or crates and not socialized much. These two are extremely shy. They had lived in a tiny kennel together for 3 years, with no access to walks, socialization or the outside. We think they may be siblings as they look very much alike. The male is the larger of the two. Even though they were extremely shy when they arrived they are finally starting venturing out into their yard and playing now. Both Denali and Gypsy are still extremely "wolfy" and will not come to be petted or leashed and it's been almost a year. These two beauties are very bonded and stick together like glue. They have been allowed into the larger yard with a few other dogs and have shown no aggression - just curiosity. They have dug a den and like to hide in there. Keep watching our site for new photos and updates. Both of these beauties will see the vet for examination, and soon Denali will be neutered and Gypsy spayed. They are available for adoption to a wolf sanctuary that can give them a forever and happy home. Contact Pamela Jo at PamelaJoWolflady2@sbcglobal.net for more information.

He’s a 7yom labeled WD (may be LC?) – but the hair photo looks coarser than northern breeds generally are. Living with two dogs a female aussie & a male schipperke (grouchy) – non-aggressive but supposedly doesn’t get on with males(?) not sure about that since he’s living with a small male dog (apparently that was reported by a potential adopter who had a male greyhound that must not have liked Basco) – He was thin but has gained weight in the last month – was chained for 4 years in the garage – wormy – fleas – emaciated – the usual – went through divorce & surrendered - great with people – loves kids – has separation anxiety / counter surfer / garbage cans – easy keeper will stay close & not wander off even without a fence. Tenali Tenali Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: Wisconsin
Status: Available
1 year old Tenali is a spayed female Malamute mix with a sweet face that will melt your heart. She is a lovely social girl. She needs a secure and financially stable forever home that can offer inside family & couch time and a secure fenced yard (6 foot) for play time to run off her boundless energy. She would also like a young male companion (or companions) who can keep up with her. She likes long walks, loves the snow and would make the perfect (on leash only) hiking companion. Tenali likes car rides if they are not too long. She can sleep in a large crate if her family is near but will need a secure fenced area to stay in while her family is at work. She could get herself into trouble if she is left in the house alone. Her recall from the play yard isn’t the best because she just loves playing outside. But bribery works and she will follow her play companions inside. Tenali is a medium sized girl and weighs about 70 pounds. She would like a home without small children or cats but seems to get along well with all dogs of any size. She is up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm free. As with all rescue animals we want to ensure that good lifetime matches are made and that a forever home is just that. So we will ask you to complete an application with Veterinarian references, a secure fenced play yard is a requirement not an option and a home visit will be required. A successful applicant will be considered a “lifetime foster home”. Our goal is to make sure that Tenali is going forever home and will never need rescue again. Contact Jayne at thegreywolf@tds.net.

Laurel Laurel Gender: Female
Age: adult
Loc: New Jersey
Status: Available
Laurel is a spayed female Alaskan Malamute mix who has come a long way since her rescue from a hoarder in Tennessee. With little to no socialization for most of her life, Laurel was feral. The human touch was bizarre and scary to her, as she had never been acclimated to the company of people. Even then, it was clear there was a small light of hope for her to live amongst people. She showed a lot of potential, and over time, Laurel has come to love affection and petting, specifically butt scratches! One of her favorite things to do is go for long walks and hikes.
Laurel's journey of progress does not end here, and she needs someone who can accompany her in this path of acceptance and love. More info coming soon.

Storm is a beautiful and energetic female husky. She is originally from a horrendous hoarding situation in Kentucky, where more than half of the dogs found penned together starved to death. Due to there tragic upbringing, she is shy at first but bonds and warms up quickly . Storm also has a very high prey drive and would not be good with small dogs or cats. She does get along with other dogs her size that can withstand her version of play.
Storm loves to go for walks and play outside, and does very well inside the house. She usually lays down and quietly relaxes. She knows basic commands such as sit and is learning how to walk on a leash without pulling. Age: adult
Loc: New Jersey
Status: Available
Owen is a stunning and very tall german shepherd/wolf mix recently arrived to Howling Woods. He is approximately a year and a half old. Owen is timid around strangers and large groups of people, but warms up after some treats. He is very laid back and walks very well on a leash. He knows a few tricks such as sit, lay down, and paw. Owen would do fine in a home with a companion dog and playmate for him, or on his own. He is good inside and in the car, you just need a car large enough that can fit him!
Owen is food aggressive with other dogs and must be fed seperately. Owen is part wolf and not legal to have as a pet in many States.

Max Max Gender: Male
Age: adult
Loc: Florida
Status: Available
Max is in a North Florida rescue at this time. He was found stray in a neighboring county. It took 2 weeks of feeding treats to finally get a hand on his rusty tight choke collar he had on. He appeared to be a stray for a long time. He is extremely skittish but gentle at the same time. He is fearful of most humans but seems to do well with women. He absolutely loves kids, and other animals. Not sure about cats. He gets along with all non-aggressive breeds. He has never shown any aggression whatsoever. He will give the occasional huff when he sees his food coming as to say “hurry up, can’t you see I'm hungry”! He would do best where he has canine/wolfdog friends like him. Max will only be placed with someone with wolfdog experience. Secure containment is required; if he gets loose he will travel. Just a fenced yard won’t do. He will need a secure kennel while not supervised. His current kennel has a concrete floor and steel roof with 9 gauge wire walls. He may be ok inside home but he needs lots of time to adjust and bond and build trust. Please contact Berry Norris at berrynorris@att.net or Debbie at dak0717@hotmail.com

Miley (previously known as Wylie) Miley (previously known as Wylie) Gender: Female
Age: 1 yr old
Loc: Indiana
Status: Available
Assistance with transportation if its the right home, distance may not have a max. If its for a meeting to see if it may be a match, probably about 6 hour driving. Miley is fostered through a husky rescue will require a home visit.
Miley was in a VA animal shelter as a stray. She looked to be about 8-9 months old at the time and she appeared to have a broken leg that was never taken care of properly. The Virginia German Shepherd Rescue sent out a plea to see if anyone would foster her so she would not be euthanized by the shelter. Her foster parents volunteered to foster her thinking she was a husky/shepherd mix. They never had any intentions of keeping her. The goal had always been get medical attention for her leg (which ended up having to be amputated), and then to find her a good home.
Miley is about 60 lbs (ish). Black/gray/white. Striking markings. Beautiful.
Tri-pod - missing front right leg but no physical limitations at this time. Can run, jump, dig, and do stairs just as good or better than a dog with 4 legs. Long term will need to watch her other front leg and diagonal back leg for wear and tear.
Miley is about 1 year old; low content (based on personality and physical attributes is she is mostly husky with maybe a little shepherd and a little wolf?); 55-60lbs - ideal weight; spayed - Oct. 2014. She is fully vaccinated and no medical needs at this time.
Known history - A man dropped her off at the VA shelter and said she was a stray but the shelter had reported that she seemed attached to the man. Several WD breeders in the area were contacted, and one specifically said she might be one of theirs but they didn't seem interested in helping her.
Miley is: Fun and very playful (almost cat like in many ways). Loving and affectionate. High energy. Mischievous and can be destructive. Needs high amounts of stimulation and engagement. Loves to climb.
When meeting new people she generally is nervous at first but then warms up quickly and can be very affectionate. When they take her to places like Petsmart and Petco for adoption days she needs about 15-20 minutes to warm up (her hackles will go up at first and she is nervous), but then she settles in and takes treats nicely from visitors and does very well. However when foster family had a maintenance man come to their home Miley was growling some and her hackles were up. She seems to take cues from the German shepherds in the foster home. If they are comfortable with the visitor, so is she, but if they are nervous of the visitor, so it she.
She absolutely loves other dogs. She plays very rough though so needs dogs that can handle her exuberance. At daycare she plays with dogs about 40lbs and up.
Miley is unknown with cats. She shows interest but doesn't seem aggressive. Its very hard to tell if she'd have prey drive with a cat if left unattended. She's met a few 15 lbs dogs and she did fine at first but then when they tried to play with her she played too rough and the small dogs would snap at her. She is pretty good at having another dog put her in her place but it doesn't stop her from trying again (she'll pause when she is corrected, but then will instigate the other dog again - its a game and fun to her). She does best with dogs close to her size or larger.
When supervised and on-leash Miley did very well with children, but shouldn't trust her in a home with children though yet as she can be destructive with anything she decides looks like fun to chew up and destroy. She also has some resource guarding issues. If she took a child's toy or stuffed animal, she could likely "claim it" and show aggression when someone goes to take it from her. She is doing well working on this with her foster parents and trainer but she needs firm leadership and consistency.
She does like to dig but not excessively. If she had a lot of pent of energy and was bored she may dig even more. In her foster home she gets 2 long walks a day for about 2-2.5 miles each. She has not destroyed any furniture but could if left in a house unattended. She has destroyed some blinds and a rug (in addition to dozens of dog toys, socks, and things like that). She was much worse with no house manners when she was first brought to her foster home, and after the past couple months of consistency and reinforcement, she is doing better and learning to respond to correction. They also keep a leash on her in the house. She drags the leash around so they can easily get a hold of her if she gets into something she shouldn't be doing.
She definitely resource guards. If she gets a sock from the hamper but you get to her quickly, she may protest a bit but she is doing better with "drop" especially if you pull up on the leash a bit while you firmly command "drop". Foster parents have been working on her food bowl for months and she is 95% better with the food bowl for her foster parents. They have trained her that their hands going into her food bowl are a good thing and they are giving her more food or something even more yummy than food. When they first brought her home she would have bitten if you got to close to her food but she is much better with her foster parents now and doesn't show any aggression but she is still obsessive about her food. She is still bad with a high value item like a kong filled with yummy treats. The longer she has it and the more frustrated she gets that she can't get a treat out, the worse her intensity is when you go to take it from her. This is similar with anything she is chewing up/destroying. The sooner you get to her to take it the less resistance. The longer she has it, the more she has claimed it and the worse her guarding. She has come a long way in the
4 months but she still has a long way to go and she will need constant reinforcement.
4.5-5 foot 4 board paddock fencing with chicken wire has contained her just fine but she is never left outside completely unattended for very long without other things in the yard to engage her. If she was extremely bored and there was something outside the fence she wanted, she might try to dig or climb out. Contact Debbie at dak0717@hotmail.com

Update 8/26/15 Very Urgent - Still at the shelter! - Montana - This gorgeous 6-year-old Shepherd mix, Jacob cannot be adopted where there are small animals or kids - his last home had a small child who tried to take his chew toy out of his mouth and got nipped. The child wasn't supervised as all children should be when around animals, and the bite wasn't serious, but poor Jacob wound up at the shelter and may be euthanized if we don't get him out soon. He's getting depressed and so sad that he lost his home. The shelter will only release him to a certified Rescue. Please help us get him out. Jacob is sweet and playful and gorgeous and will make a wonderful companion for some active adults. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Jacob, please contact Kim as soon as possible.
